Here's the buzz: "Jennifer Wilson is a wonderful, encouraging teacher, and well as a brilliant dancer. Her combinations are fun, inspiring and really make you think! The class sizes tend to be small (8-10) so you receive a lot of individual attention. She gives very clear corrections and tries to challenge you. No two classes are the same, and she tailors the class to the students present. I've studied with her for two years now, and EVERYONE in the class has improved a lot."
Her schedule is:
Beginning Adult Ballet on Wednesday, 7:15-8:15pm
Intermediate Adult Ballet on Tuesday and Thursday, 7:30-9pm
Newport/Mesa Ballet
Corner of Adams and Harbour
Costa Mesa
Recommended teacher is artistic director Stella Viorica, who is a former Romanian National Ballet soloist. Classes observe strict ballet protocol. Here's what I hear: "I got to dance in two performances of [the school's] 'A Christmas Carol,' including a passage across the stage with a partner that included two different lifts. Not bad for a 54-year-old man who only started 2 years ago."
Jimmy DeFore Dance Center

According to my correspondent: "The main school for adults in Orange County and possibly in Southern California is the Jimmy DeFore Dance Studio. Its focus is the adult dancer, with a slight bias towards professional dancers and actors. Many classes and different skill levels, mostly ballet as well as jazz, tap, pilates mat work, and special classes. You are treated the same as the teens, which -- if you've danced in the past -- is exactly what you want. One of the ballet instructors has a performing group in which the only requirement is that one be over 30. I've gone to a lot of studios and this one is not intimidating, but not easy, and everyone does get better. My turns class ranges from 13 year olds to 50. I think for an aging dancer the last thing you want is to be treated like an aging dancer and this place doesn't."

My correspondent writes: 'I have been with Gotta Dance Studio in El Segundo (next to LAX airport) for 18
months. Bella E. Samel, the instructor owner, has a small studio and mostly beginning adult students. She works us as hard as we can take and is very considerate of injuries (limitations) and the pure fright most of us have at
the beginning. She has a great expertise with ballroom, tap and jazz and has been an excellent teacher for me with ballet and pointe. This is an ideal studio to start out as an adult. My first six months in class were shared with a woman who was over 80!!'

Here's what I know about this place, so far. It's a new studio, and Karen Coe is the director and recommended teacher. Teen/adult classes are 6:30-7:30pm, Monday through Friday. "Karen is a local soloist. When you do something wrong, she lets you know politely; doesn't just say 'great' and go on." Anyone have the phone number for this studio? Let me know.

My correspondent writes: 'It doesn't sound much like a place for a dance studio, but it's an old historic building with a wood floor and a mirror, and he has a stand alone barre for us. But, I don't come there for the studio but for his advice. He has a way with using metaphors to describe the technical aspects he wants from us. I am impressed with the different ways he can describe what is needed. And, he asks from us a little more than what we give to push us to new limits. I had taken ballet classes previously from others, yet I learned new things from him not illustrated to me before. He has a wonderful background, studying with Stanley Williams, Martha Graham (I can't remember the others he has mentioned) and once in awhile he will bring up a story of a funny incident from the past. Right now the class is composed of all adults (ages 30-45), however, occasionally a teen comes in to learn. I am grateful for what he has taught me so far and I await these future classes with him.'
Dana Dominic
Pax Fiat Dance Company
La Mesa/San Diego
760.721.1447
My correspondent says that Dana was a professional
ballet and modern dancer in New York with ABT, Martha Graham Presents, and Harkness Ballet before she moved to the San Diego area to raise a family. 'She gives wonderful technique classes to suit many levels of dancers, on pointe or not, and focuses on alignment while providing fun, creative, organic choreography. Unlike many teachers, she dances with the class and demonstrates every step in full. She works with beginners through professionals, and offers as much personal attention, feedback and constructive criticism as you want. A good, solid American-style teacher to ground and fortify dancers who are trying many different styles of dance, or are trying re-establish their technique. She also teaches Martha Graham-style modern -- a rarity in San Diego.' My informant says that Dana's classes cost much less than most area studios charge. Call for class locations and times.
Ballet & Dance Art, J. Erglis Smaltzoff
7266 Sunset Blvd.
Los Angeles
323.850.9595 or 323.851.1471
This is a small studio, with all classes taught by Yuri Smaltzoff (son of studio founder J. Erglis Smaltzoff) and accompanied by Yuri's mother. Here's what my correspondent has to say: 'Yuri was trained in the Russian Bolshoi style, and has dance worldwide for stage and film. He conducts his class with warmth and humor, while challenging each student to do [his] technical best. Because of his accute, personal corrections, I feel I have advanced more in six months than I had in two years at my old studio. I can sum it up with what he told me last week in class . . . "There are no limits!" At the risk of gushing, I can say that beginners and advanced students feel at home in his class, and we have an incredibly supportive core of adult dancers.'

Recommended teachers at this newly renovated studio are Cynthia Molnar and Charlotte Richards. There is parking available nearby, but not always free. My correspondent says it depends on the time of day.
Cynthia teaches adult beginner classes -- from the very basics. Here's what her student says about her: "Her barre is intense in that she corrects us all, and her enthusiasm when we get it right is inspiring. She is a dedicated teacher and treats us all with respect and encouragement. I recommend this class to any beginner, and to others who need a brush up in 'remembering what you didn't know you had forgotten.'
According to the same adult student who recommended Cynthia, Charlotte has a unique, dynamic teaching style. She emphasizes strength and power in her classes. Our correspondent writes, "I would call them high-energy classes for the intermediate and beyond. She teaches open intermediate class which
I take as my inspiration. I have only taken class for two years (I
started when I was 52), and I can keep up with most of the barre. I am
pretty hopeless in the center, but it is so much fun that I keep coming.
Charlotte also teaches adult professional classes and pointe."

There is a huge adult following at this studio. Four different adult levels (as well as a serious pre-professional division for younger students), with adult classes offered six days a week. I don't have recommendations for specific teachers there. If you attend this studio and have a special teacher to single out, please e-mail me. Several students have recommended this studio. Here's what one has to say: 'It's a nice, comfortable but disciplined, supportive and positive environment with teachers who care. Teachers give real corrections. Classes are given at the appropriate levels (beginners classes teach the basics and advanced classes are truly challenging). There are tons of adults who go, and there is a large range from not so great to very strong, with appropriate levels to match everyone's ability.
City Ballet
941 Garnet St.
Pacific Beach
619-274-6058
My correspondent says that Steven Wistrich is a "stupendous teacher -- a human dynamo and amazing dancer (previously with Boston Ballet and Stuttgart Ballet). He places a lot of emphasis on dance technique and correction and is an excellent instructor." He has classes five days a week, Monday-Friday: 9:30-11am adult intermediate/advanced ballet, and 6:30-8pm adult intermediate ballet . Open class Saturday and Sunday at 10am. During the summer adults are welcome to participate in master classes with David Howard and other guest teachers, but register early as master classes fill quickly.
Peninsula Ballet
422 Lighthouse Ave.
Pacific Grove/Monterey
408.372.0388
The teacher/director here is Kira Ivanovsky. She is a former Ballet Russe dancer, and here's what my correspondent has to say: 'She is an absolute inspiration to everyone who knows her. She is now quite elderly, and her daughter Mileau (also an excellent dancer/teacher) is slowly taking over more of the company responsibilities. The studio space is sparse and a bit unique -- portable mirrors and barres are moved into a large art studio that has adequate wooden flooring. You may dance away, the walls hung with the latest art exhibition . . . sometimes so-so, sometimes inspiring, depending on the artist :-). Most adult classes are mixed with beginning/intermediate teens and advanced classes are mixed, so you must be comfortable with young teens who cruise through triple turns without effort (sigh). The number of adults varies widely, but you never know who might show up for a class with Kira: dancers from the San Francisco Ballet, Oakland Ballet, Royal Danish Ballet (?!) pop in when visiting as guest artists in local productions.'

Artistic director is Julia Ball, a former Tulsa Ballet dancer with an M.A. in dance education. My informant writes, 'She loves to teach adults and is great with correction. She also encourages performance opportunities. I have improved my placement, strength, flexibility, and musicality with her in one very short year. Adult classes are offered every night and Saturdays. The studio is very spacious with a great sprung floor.'

Two people wrote in to recommend this studio, which is the official school of the Sacramento Ballet. One says he began dancing again at age 40, after 17 years' absence. As a result of his study at this studio, he was able to perform with the Sacramento Ballet as a sideman in the Russian Trepak section of the Nutcracker. He has also danced other roles. He says, 'Adults are given corrections, and are expected to execute the steps as any dancer would. This attitude has brought me farther than I would have ever dreamed. I take classes in both the student and adult divisions.' Recommended teachers are Barbara Crockett and Allyson Deane.

Center City Ballet has a large youth following, but classes are open to adults. The studio is small but has a 'positive atmosphere' and is conveniently located near the 5, 8 and 163 freeways. Mira Costa offers limited classes, but at extremely low tuition rates. The studios there are 'large and inviting.' Here's what one of her students said in an e-mail: 'Wilcoxon teaches classic form by demonstrating and dancing in class and providing exciting, lifted choreography. What I like most about her classes is that ballet does not feel foreign or forced, and the choreography is organic; when you leave class, you feel lighter and prettier! Wilcoxon's teaching style is somewhat hands-off, which is nice if you already know what you're doing wrong, but she will gladly offer tips and encouragement if you respond to comments. Before focusing on the minutia of technique, she will help you understand how a move should feel and look. A lovely teacher to watch and learn from.'

Here's what her student writes: "Carolyn Goto danced professionally at Oakland Ballet and with Ballet Met after studying with Alan Howard and
being with Pacific Ballet for a number of years. She was a principal dancer at Oakland and I would imagine the same at Ballet Met. She is very classical in her approach, very thorough, quite caring and clear in her explanations."

Here's what this studio's fan has to say: 'Kathy Mata is an excellent ballet teacher! I started off, at 39, in the beginning ballet class, which is taught at 10am on Sunday mornings. Pretty soon I became a little better and started going to the Friday night, 6pm class. I eventually worked up to going to her classes five nights a week. She gives you a lot of corrections, no matter how many people are in the class. I was able to be on pointe about six months after my first class with her. I had never been on pointe before!'
Motion Pacific
408 Front St.
Santa Cruz
831.457.1616
My correspondent writes: 'The adult ballet classes at Motion Pacific are excellent and well-attended by a diverse group of students. Rebecca Bartlow and Vicky Bergland are both incredible teachers with years of experience who inspire their students with interesting combinations, positive corrections and a joyous sense of humor. The studio is well-lit and spacious, and most classes are accompanied by a skilled pianist. Many of the dancers in the adult class have had years of training and the level in the intermediate class is challenging. Pointe class is offered three times a week and there's a new variations class. In addition to excellent instruction in
ballet, Motion Pacific offers hip hop, funk, breakdancing, African, samba, jazz and yoga. Plus performance opportunities for students of all ages.'

This studio is recommended by our own Edie Rice, whose presence many of you may know from her postings on our message board. She says: 'I can't say enough about Elizabeth Lee, who teaches the adult dance classes. She was a dancer with the Philadelphia Ballet and New York City Ballet. Even though that was a long time ago, she is still exquisite. I sometimes forget to watch the combination because I am watching her. She believes in ballet as an art form that even we oldies can do. She encourages us to look beautiful and gives us combinations where we actually have a chance to feel like we are dancing.'

Here's the nuts-and-bolts recommendation I received: "The teachers at this studio are experienced and work well with adult dancers. I have observed that it's sometimes difficult for total beginners to work into the established classes, but if a dancer has had any dance at all, new students can do just fine. The teachers are supportive and encouraging. It took me a long time to find this studio in northern Orange County."

Heidi Eads is the recommended ballet teacher. My very dedicated correspondent writes: 'Heidi is really sweet, and makes the class challenging and fun. She treats adults as seriously as the younger kids she teaches. I mainly take classes with teenagers, or younger students, but this summer, there were some adults in our class. Heidi is a walking encyclopedia, and has danced with the Stuttgart Ballet, and some other places as well. I have learned a ton of variations from her this year, and yes, I AM AN ADULT (although I try not to advertise it). There are others who teach beginning adult classes, but I have not been in them, so I can't say much about them, but all the teachers at Jordan are great. They also offer tap, jazz, modern, and flamenco for students of all ages, plus creative dance for the little ones.'

My teacher, Mary Slater, is fabulous. She has tons of years' experience in dance and dance teaching. In the seventies she studied in New York City and knows the typical musical style of tap, like Ginger Rogers, as well as the jazz style, like that of Buster Brown."

Director Denise West formerly danced with Pittsburgh Ballet. The studio's focus, however, is primarily modern, jazz, lyrical, and tap. The draw here, for adult ballet students, is that my correspondent says that West allowed her to take a beginning pointe class with the 10-year-olds. So, if you're nearby and looking for a place to begin pointe, you may want to give this studio a call.
Frederick Classical Ballet

My correspondent describes the adult ballet classes here as "strictly recreational," which often carries the connotation that the teaching may not be of a serious nature. Cambridge
617.354.7467
Accessible via the MBTA Red Line, Harvard Square stop. Metered on-street parking is available.
My correspondent is working toward a professional dance career, and here's what he has to say about Jose Mateo: "He has analyzed ballet carefully, and is able to communicate it well. He has thought about everything he does, and is willing to question and even change things which don't make sense in a particular teaching or stylistic tradition. He's very picky, and will call your attention to details you were not aware of. He started ballet as an adult and danced professionally in New York for a number of years before moving to Boston. His legacy includes some of the finest training. And he runs a professional company as well as a school. Students can go as far as they wish. I have seen a number of ballet teachers and schools in my years, including ex-dancers from very top professional companies such as ABT, NYC Ballet, Dance Theatre of Harlem, etc. I have never seen someone as good at what he does as Mr. Mateo."
The Dance Place
50 Water Street, The Tannery
Newburyport
978.465.1485
Newburyport is about 40 minutes from Boston. This studio was recommended as a fine studio for ballet in general. Open intermediate classes on Wednesdays at 6:30pm and Saturday mornings at 8:45. Suitable for advanced beginners as well. My correspondent writes: "The studio is known for jazz, but the ballet classes are pure ballet, and Denise Collins is why people keep coming to these classes. She was one of my first teachers, and has always given very creative and thorough class, with excellent corrections and insight." Pilates offered at the studio during the day, more classes planned.

This studio is recommended by a die-hard flamenco aficionado and guitarist who should know. Near Boston, this is the Omayra Amaya studio. Amaya is a grand-niece of the renowned Carmen Amaya: 'She is a terrific person, a concentrated teacher and performer, socially graceful, and as polished as a glass paperweight. Since she is Gypsy, she has all the proper contacts and frequently has visitors from Spain and all over the flamenco world, which are important to students and aficionados alike.' The studio is accessible by public transportation.
New England Dance Conservatory
143 Shaker Road
East Longmeadow
413.525.7713
The recommended teachers are owners Kenneth Lipitz and Shelley Ziebel. And, it's a fabulous story from a dancing mom: "My daughter has studied at this school for several years. After sitting for MANY HOURS a week, I finally
decided to take some classes myself. At 43 years old, I now take 10 classes a week: several ballet, also some modern, jazz, and tap. I have always felt welcome and not looked down on. When I was extremely self-concious I was allowed to work without much in the way of corrections (this is what I wanted!!!). As my confidence grew, the teachers seemed to sense it and the corrections became more frequent. These people are WONDERFUL teachers. . . . I started out wanting a little exercise and wound up totally addicted!!!" Students from the conservatory have gone on to professional careers in ballet and modern dance.

Even as an adult they will help you to reach your potential, whether it's to learn triple turns, separated wings, or beautiful extension . . . . There is also a performance class for adults in which you are required to take one jazz tech class a week and the performance class." This is a second studio recommended by the same guy who brought us The Dance Place in Massachusetts. Portsmouth is about 20 minutes north of Newburyport, and about an hour from Boston. This is the school of the Ballet New England dance company, and they offer a full adult program in ballet (Russian technique), as well as classes in flamenco, modern, and jazz. Our correspondent says, 'The ballet classes are definitely not for the squeamish or tentative (though they have a good intro class once a week).
- Christine Simes is teaching both adult beginner/intermediate and intermediate/advanced classes. Our correspondent says, 'She has a wonderful manner about her, and she has a way of bringing out the best in everyone in class, even with greatly mixed ability levels.'
- Angela Sears is 'a company dancer and leader, and is also a wonderful teacher.'
Both teachers are very helpful with corrections, explanations, and demonstrations, and these are serious classes for serious ballet students.

Both of these teachers have been on this list for years -- recommended by students at the studios where these teachers were formerly based. About Roni, one of my former informants said, "Roni is an exceptional ballet teacher. She provides insights and perspectives that make you want to dance your heart out for her." More recently, I received an e-mail that spoke about both Roni and Amy in the following way: "They are fantastic and supportive of kids in a very self-esteem building way (also the kids seem to have a great time while learning while in their respective classes). My two daughters love their classes which makes it very easy for me too. Also, parents (adults) seem to enjoy themselves as well." This last comes from a parent with dancing kids, but as both these teachers were already recommended here for their adult ballet classes, I thought it appropriate to list their new studio venture.

This studio is recommended by Blue Diamond website contributor George Janca (whose story is featured on our Men's Page, and who also contributed to the article on adults in dance competitions appearing in newsletter issue #6). He writes: "Arlene danced ballet professionally and has several decades of teaching experience. Her classes include ballet and tap for beginners to adult. She promotes
adults in dance through recitals, competitions, and by sponsoring a performing dance troupe. She has carefully designed ballet choreography to be pleasing to the eye as well as challenging to the adult
performer. Arlene promotes the love of dance through her tireless efforts to teach, gently correct, and share her own passion for dance. I am convinced she should have at least one tap step/break combination named after her."

'Jenell is the recommended teacher. She is a good dancer and gifted as a teacher. This studio is fairly new, and now in its second year. Since this studio was initially recommended, the adult class has grown to seven dancers.

I hesitate to list this as a serious ballet studio, since the student who recommends it lists offerings as 'Ballet - Tap - Jazz - Acrobatics - Baton.' Oh, well, ballet teachers have to make a living, too. Studio owner/teacher Tamala Taylor is a member of Dance Masters of America and the Cecchetti Ballet Counsel of America. If there's no other adult class in your area, you may want to give this a try. The student who recommends Tamala says, 'Her adult classes are wonderful, she is a stick teacher yet the classes are so much fun . . . she loves to joke around and have a good time yet things get learned and everything.'

Director of dance is Cindi Miller. One of her students says: 'Her teaching includes attention to each student. A dancer will not go through one class without some tip or suggestion to help. She understands if it is difficult for the older adult dancer to extend to a 90 degree arabesque, but
she will encourage the dancer in other areas of ability (line, turns, jumps, etc.). This is what I love about her teaching. She mixes professional technique with fun and makes you want to come to every class.'

Two people wrote in to recommend this studio. Singled out for praise is Leidi Yu, who teaches an adult advanced class M-W-F at 10am (with students ranging in age from 30s to 60, some of them former professionals and others who began ballet as adults). It's a challenging and rigorous class. Also available: classes for beginning and intermediate adults. The studio has recently e-mailed me to say that modern and Pilates-based classes are also available.

The student who wrote to me initially had a very bad experience at another area ballet school, and then found Portland Community Ballet. She writes, 'My teacher, Lizette DuBay, immediately welcomed me into the school. After one beginning adult ballet class, she invited me to take the regular advanced classes. I asked her if I could start on pointe, with which I'd had basically no experience, and the very next day she fitted me with pointe shoes, and
two days later I took my first pointe class. Both Lizette and Cynthia Tosh, the artistic director, encourage everyone in dance, regardless of his or her age, ability, or future professional prospects. It is a very supportive atmosphere, and there is a ballet class for anyone at any level. As Cynthia told me, the younger dancers have no problem with having adults in their classes. I so appreciate how Lizette gives me the same attention as she does the young girls in my classes. She compliments my
strengths and corrects my technique, and I never feel that I'm too old to be a ballerina, or that I don't belong in ballet classes as much as the younger girls do. In fact, a few days ago she invited me to perform in a March production of "Cinderella." '

My informant writes: 'Do I feel blessed! This dance studio is for the adult student! Studio owner and instructor Christina Hintz has concentrated on the adult dance at all levels. She has classes for the beginner up to the advanced pointe dancer. And she takes us all very seriously in a gentle manner. How fortunate I feel to have an instructor who knows I am there to be the best dancer I can be (at 48 year old) and pushes me to never stop trying. Her classes are disciplined and structured and we all love it! Corrections and compliments are plentiful, and there are 20 classes per week.'

This studio has a thriving adult population. Here's what my totally gonzo (and 40+) correspondent has to say: 'Donna Ranalli, the studio owner (and my tap and jazz teacher) is just fantastic. She cares just as much about (if not more than) her adults as she does about the rest of her students -- and her adult classes go to competitions. Donna's studio is known for tap, and I will have my first competition experience with my adult tap class this year. She has some really well-seasoned adult dancers, and I was rather intimidated when I first came, but both Donna and the other students have been very encouraging and inspirational. They also are never too busy to review parts of the routine that I have trouble with. Our adult tap class danced in the Philadelphia Thanksgiving Day Parade,
and I never worked so hard as I did to learn that routine! I felt like I had really accomplished something when I did that parade. She also has an absolutely wonderful ballet teacher who teaches our adult class. Our ballet class is also going to be in the recital this year.' Here's the story: "I am an adult who kept putting off going back to ballet for no good reason, but finally got around to calling around and ended up at the Ballet Academy of Texas. Victoria Fedine, the director, is fantastic! The best ballet instructor I have ever had (also said by a past SF Ballet professional who regularly attends), and adults love her! She allows the adults to progress at their own pace if they are there strictly for exercise or enjoyment, but for the more serious dancers (there are a few of us adults who still dream) she is great at working with you to help you reach new targets every day! . . . I really can't say enough about how great this school is, I am just happy to have found it. I have visited other schools in this area, they may have a bigger name or bigger budget, but unlike many of them, Ms. Fedine is the real thing!"
The school's technique and emphasis is Balanchine. Among Fedine's credits are her work as soloist with Youskevitch's Ballet Romantique, and as principal dancer with the Maryland Ballet and Memphis Ballet. Fedine has taught at schools throughout the country, among them, the Andre Eglevsky School of Ballet, and Eliot Feld Ballet Company. She was assistant supervisor at Dance Theater of Harlem, student and curriculum supervisor at Pacific Northwest Ballet School, and associate director at the Fort Worth School of Ballet.

Okay, this one's entirely in my informant's words (cut to fit space):
'I'm an adult, a former (professional) ballet dancer from many, many moons ago. . . . I'm recommending this studio because it simply does offer wonderful adult ballet classes! Classes are currently advanced only. Usually they have intermediate level, but as of this moment they haven't hired an instructor (they're verrry fussy about who teaches classes). These are truly advanced classes--but adults who took ballet as teens or during their early college
years and were at an intermediate level or higher should be fine. (So if it's been a few years--or more--since you hung up those ballet shoes, don't despair!) Anyone interested is welcome to observe a class first to see if
they'd feel comfortable.
Advanced adult ballet classes are sometimes attended by the school's professional division students--very serious dance students with NYCB, ABT, Houston and San Fran level abilities and bodies--but these young girls are all very nice and not at all snobbish to anyone. The classes are also often attended by members of Ballet West. And some of the regulars are students over 40 and 50 who just started ballet about six years ago as beginners amd are now doing quite well at the advanced level--some even en pointe!
Classes are available 3 times a week: 7-8:30 p.m., Monday and Thursday, and 10-11:30 a.m., Saturday. In addition, there is a Pilates class offered 9-10 a.m., Saturday. All teachers are good, but Saturday morning class is taught by Lisa LaManna, a former principal dancer with Ballet West. Lisa is so dearly loved, that if she can't teach, there are students who won't take class--not that the other teachers aren't good, it's just that everyone loves her so much. Classes are currently (as of 3.2.98) $8.50 each. Live piano at all classes. Phone first to make sure class is in session.'

This studio has morning adult dance classes (at a walk-in fee of $12 per class as of this writing; class cards, $10/class; monthly rates even lower). The woman who recommended this studio mentions Pat Sorrell as 'wonderful and very thorough.' She goes on to say that VBT adult classes are supposed to be mixed levels, but she feels a beginner would feel lost. Another correspondent who also attends VBT tells me that there are also great evening classes that range from level 1 (beginning) through level 4 (pre-professional). He says that Pat Sorrell's adult class may be appropriate for beginners, 'if they have good body control, can think on their feet well, and let her know ahead of time what their level is.' VBT also offers modern and jazz classes, and they are 'trying to program men's and partnering classes.'
A third person has written in, and he says the following: 'I am a dance instructor into my 21st year of teaching; however, absent from
my own regular dance training since college...15 years. Just like staring
over! I started taking class with Suzanne Lownsbury-Long at VBT in January. Suzanne is an excellent instructor with every level, and can work with a beginner while addressing a more seasoned dancer in the same class. She has helped me tremendously with some re-training and has been very patient with
explanation as well as theory. It has made a difference in my teaching and
I feel really good about being "back in ballet".'
Here is yet a fourth person who wrote to sing the praises of this school:
'Although we have moved out of the area, I was an adult beginning ballet student at VBT with Pat Sorrell, Kathy Brenner (no longer at VBT) and Janina Bove. Pat's daytime classes are wonderful, and I agree with the writer who stated that Pat is more than willing to work with interested adult beginners. The atmosphere in the classes is not intimidating, but this is ballet training -- not a glorified exercise/movement class. A word about Janina:
Janina teaches in the evening program. Although her classes are mixed-age and grouped by level, she is a wonderful teacher for adults. Her warmth and humor are a hard combination to beat.'

Since beginning with him, I've performed in Coppelia, Ballet Hoo!, the Nutcracker, and am now rehearsing for Cinderella. Working with Bud has been wonderful, as he is unfailingly patient while urging us to coax the most out of ourselves. More than technique, he values artistry and the ability to connect with an audience. He fills each class with humor and anecdotes of his past experiences as a dancer. . . . Dancing has opened up a whole new world for me. I know the feeling of irony, of loving something so much in spite of my deafness and late start. Here's what my fellow adult ballet student writes about this studio (which seems quite wonderful): "I study classical ballet at (of all places) The West Virginia YOUTH Ballet. Carolou Russell is our director and teaches adult classes 3 nights a week. She choreographs for all levels based upon the students' ability in any particular class. She is very enthusiastic about teaching men and boys. Every year (for the past 19 years) she does a Nutcracker performance. Everyone is welcome to participate as she choreographs based upon the ability of her dancers. I met my husband at rehearsals. We dance together as "party parents" and "Mother Ginger and Baker." My husband is "Mouse King" and has also been in the Arabian variation in previous years. One year I was a part of the Arabian corps and was in a part of Apotheosis. Several of my more talented classmates dance in "Snow" and "Flowers" corps. Mrs. Russell also holds a yearly receital in June. The teacher's name is Marta Horvath. Here's the buzz: 'She is absolutely wonderful. I can't say enough. She is the teacher I started out with, and I continue to take all three of her classes each week (two beginner and one intermediate). Having been a principal dancer in communist Romania, her classes are Vaganova-based, perhaps integrating a bit more Cecchetti and always providing English (RAD) vocabulary for everything we do. She has lots of teaching experience with professional schools across Canada and is just basically lovely. She can integrate dancers of different abilities, giving corrections to those who want them/can take them, providing encouragment and advice to those who need that a bit more. If you seek more corrections, Marta will give them. At times i have wished Marta would give me more corrections, but later have realised that Marta can see
when students are trying too hard, that what they really need to do is relax instead of concentrate more. She is very sensitive to these sorts of dynamics, and it has helped me so much. The beginner classes are quite
slow and easy (although I still feel that I benefit greatly from them. The intermediate classes use more difficult combinations across the floor, more barre work on demi-pointe, and quicker tempos in petit allegro. this class can be a challenge, and there are some wonderful dancers in there. For this, it can also be inspiring. The school
itself has a professional youth company associated with it, which groomed one of the principal dancers of the National Ballet of Canada, a number of dancers at Ballet BC, a soloist at the Washington Ballet, and many others. Saying that the school is not adult-oriented would be an understatement, but we are allowed to take part in the

Directly from the keyboard of Sara, who recommended this school (as well as Boswell, below): 'This is a drop-in situation for all levels, and I'd recommend it for adults with some background already, although the introductory classes are definitely geared to those who know nothing. Beyond those classes, however, the work is quite difficult. Since these are drop-in classes, don't expect corrections on technique (though they may come!). You need a sense of humility for these classes as dancers from visiting companies, cruise ships, and touring groups will often drop in. Very inspiring if you can keep it in perspective and not get down on yourself.
And more on Harbour, from a different correspondent:
Although the classes are all drop-in classes, they vary in intensity and difficulty. There are four levels: intro to pre-ballet, pre-ballet, ballet 1 and ballet 2. The intro class isn't strictly an introductory level: Teachers do not define terms or slowly demonstrate. But, this level is great for those with a little experience who want to concentrate on maintaining alignment, and enjoy a little bit of a challenge. The pre-ballet is similarly not what one would ordinarily expect. Our reviewer says, 'I also take the pre-ballet class on Wednesdays and this, for me, is a considerable challenge when we get to the centre and moving across the floor. I need this challenge to improve, but it is by no means for all intermediate-beginners. It could be quite intimidating. The teachers that I have had the most experience with are Danielle and Marek. Both are GREAT. I had heard rumours that you get no corrections
in Harbour Dance ballet classes, but I don't find this at all. Both Marek and Danielle give me corrections almost every class, and these classes are quite full. Both teachers are quite rigourous and both teach with great senses of humour.
Another great class is the barre a terre with Marlise. It's challenging and intense: She warms you up with these amazing breathing/stretching exercises which MAKE YOU
FEEL INTENSELY WARMED UP! Hands down the best class I've taken in terms of increasing my muscle awareness, especially in the whole pelvic area (lower back, hips, inner thighs, and lower abs). This class could benefit all dancers -- modern, jazz, ballet -- everyone.'

Essentially a RAD school, but the adult beginner class is not set in stone: 'The teacher of this class is Marnie Goessman, and she is great. Very supportive and willing to work you as hard as you want to be worked. This class is enjoyable for beginners, but can also benefit a more experienced adult dancer as a back-to-fundamentals type of class, but not boring!' Adults with stronger backgrounds are welcome in regular, non-adult classes, ages ranging from 14-30. These intermediate-level classes are taught by Sharon Boswell, director of the school. My correspondent writes, 'I can't say enough about Sharon . . . always smiling, the class has a cheery, inspiring atmosphere. This is a great school.'

The recommended teacher here is Elain Daviau, and the student who recommended her has this to say: 'Her attitude is one of love for her dancers, and love for this art form. Although she pushes us, it is to bring out all we have, to reach down inside our muscles and draw from them our raw power and emotions. She is not only charming, but takes the class a little less seriously than most teachers I've met, without losing any of the thrust of the work. She takes time to explain motivations, body positions and why we need them. Not simply the do-it-because-I-said-so mentality. Her love just permeates the place, and it is a joy to see her work.' He was easily able to conduct a class that provided challenge to the more
intermediate students, yet took the time to give quality technical instruction to the total beginners without making them feel like they're holding everyone else back. He was also able to really push and discipline the ones who were very serious (like me!) but took it easier on the students who were looking for a more recreational-type class. He never judged any of the students for what they each wanted out of learning ballet as an adult. Overall he is thoroughly professional and respectful of adult students, and has none of the attitude that many teachers have that "Adults can't/shouldn't learn stuff like this." Here we go, directly from the e-mail of the redoubtable dancer who recommends the school: "I should tell you about my dance school, which has a huge adult
attendance. It's called Ballet Divertimento, and is in downtown Montreal. The classes are as good as it gets, in the Russian method. The teachers are from Russia, in fact. The woman who runs the school is very attentive. For example, I asked for a pointe class after my
regular ballet class, and she called me the same day to talk about it!!!!
"There are all levels, beginner/intermediate, intermediate, and advanced, and I can't say enough good things about the teachers. I am taking intermediate because I want to really improve my technique (it's a
personal problem ;-), and my teacher Victoria, who grew up in a Russian ballet school is probably one of the best
teachers I have ever had. She is very attentive, gives lots of corrections, and is very articulate in the way that she explains and demonstrates the movements.
"This school is known as 'the' school for adults in Montreal for serious ballet study. I should also mention, because it isn't always the case, that the attititude of all the students is one of support, where we grow and improve together. I actually look forward to seeing the other girls, as much as the class."

The recommended teacher is Emma Sintani, who teaches Vaganova style, as well as jazz, Spanish dance, and 'a better way to take your life,' according to the 26-year-old dancer who writes about her: 'For me, she is the best teacher for adult dance students in all my country. She has much knowledge about human anatomy, physiology, patience, and she will help anyone who wants to learn to dance. She is a great choreographer, and very sensitive artist. And the best thing is that she is a great person, very friendly, lovely, and modern. I know all the teachers in Bolivia, and there is no better than she.'

Classes are taught by Zoe Mottaz-Boukouvalas, with adult ballet on Friday evenings, from 6.30-7.30. My informant says, 'It's for mixed abilities, and Zoe is very good at setting the levels so that everyone from beginners to advanced students are stretched, but no one feels left behind. She is young and enthusiastic, and the atmosphere is friendly and informal. Her technique is very good.'

My Cambridge correspondent writes, 'Director Karen Stringer herself began ballet as an adult. She knows how hard it is for her adult beginners/returners -- and she also knows from personal experience that we are capable of more than we think, no matter what our age or experience. Her classes are enjoyable.' The studio has five adult ballet classes each week:
- Saturdays: adult beginners at 10am, advanced teens and adults at 1pm
- Tuesdays: advanced adults at 6:15pm
- Wednesdays: general adult class at 5:30pm
- Thursdays: general/advanced adults at 6:15pm
My Cambridge lady mentions that both of these locations are used for ballet only during the times listed. MB Academy is about a mile from the centre of town, but has ample free parking. The Russian Ballet School is as central as you can get, and has parking facilities beside the school for weekday classes only. Students with cars should collect the key to the car park barrier from the steward at the downstairs bar. Since this listing first appeared, I've heard from the director of The Russian Ballet School, who writes that she entered eight adult students in examinations last June and they all achieved at least Pass Plus, and two received Honours. It seems to me that this school would be an excellent one to check out.

Recommended teachers are Renato Peroni and Theresa Kelsey. My correspondent writes that both of these teachers care a great deal about their students, run very safe classes, and know ballet inside out, emphasising control, placement and building strength in the right places.
First, regarding Renato: "Renato teaches a pure classical Maggie Black Barre (rumoured to be more Maggie Black than Maggie Black!) and a Balanchine inspired centre. The emphasis on technique in these classes is legendary, and you do see a lot of improvement in all his regular students. He is a perfectionist and it is not unknown to repeat the same excersize three or four times, with something new to concentrate on each time. Far from being dull, the class is enlivened by Renato's use of philosophical and comic examples to make his point clear." Classes are: beginning ballet on Thursday 7-8pm and Sunday 1-2:30pm; intermediate on Sunday 2:30-4pm; and professional Tuesday through Friday 10-11:30am.
About Theresa: "Theresa is teaching the RAD method. She has an uncanny ability to see absolutely everything that's going on in her class, and everyone gets a lot of individual corrections." Her classes are: beginning ballet, Tuesday 6-7pm; easy pre-elementary, Monday 5:30-6:30pm; and hard pre-elementary, Saturday 2-3:30pm.

Two different persons have written in to recommend two different teachers. The first is Anne Aylor: "Anne came from the US, teaches Russian-style ballet, and is a very patient, musical and stimulating teacher. Instead of correcting bits and pieces, she identifies the keys to make you stay in balance longer and jump up higher. She is very serious about technique and she usually attracts students who are serious and care about the detail or subtlety of movements. Anne also trains your musical sense; her allegro is challenging while her adagio is stunningly graceful. Finally, she always encourages each individual to make progress, without adopting the old British way of trying to push students forward by promoting a strong sense of competition, or defeating their ego. Her enthsiasim will really impact you." She teaches every Friday night, with an elementary class from 6-7:30 and an intermediate class from 7:30-9.
Also recommended is Jane Carr, whose student writes, "She is the best thing that ever happened to adult education with regards to ballet. She is the ultimate teacher for adults taking on ballet for the first time. She put me through my basic and improvers course for my access course, which has since enabled me to start a degree in Dance. If she hadn't taught me, I would be finding my ballet course extremely hard round about now. She makes the most difficult concepts look so easy and has a nice professional and kind manner about correcting people. She is based at Morley College and is the director of dance and drama there. She is rarely thanked for her hard work but needless to say I and lots of others are extremely grateful to her for her continuous support."

Classes at the above London studios are taught by Suzan Zalcman, ARAD (i.e., taught using the Royal Academy of Dance syllabus). For more information, contact Suzan at 01 171 289 1869.
The person who recommends this teacher began ballet at age 27, and Suzan was her first teacher. After three years of class, my correspondent says, 'I can hold my own in higher level classes without too much embarrassment.' She goes on to say: 'I can recommend Suzan's classes, especially for a complete beginner who does not want to spend the first year just performing plies (like some basic classes I have tried). The classes are of a mixed level, but generally the classes at Pineapple are more basic than those at The Urdang Academy.'

Anne Meteier -- Ballet
124 boulevard de Rochechouard
Paris
My correspondent says there is no phone at the studio, so he gives the following schedule:
- Beginning ballet: 7pm Tuesdays, 7 pm Fridays, and 6 pm Saturdays
- Beginning ballet with pointe: 7 pm Thursdays
- Intermediate ballet: 11 am Sundays
- Intermediate ballet with pointe: 4 pm Tuesdays, 7 pm Wednesdays, 4 pm Thursdays, and 4 pm Saturdays
Mme. Meteier's student says: 'This teacher is very strict concerning ballet bases (en dehors, stretched legs and feet, etc.). But she has the same level of requirement
for all her students. So she's very good for people who want to start or restart ballet seriously.'

Rijkserkende Balletschool Trees Zegers
- Ballet Jazz Modern -
Herenweg 10
Utrecht

Here's what an enthusiastic student has to say about teacher Trees Zegers: 'She's a lovely, enthusiastic and thorough teacher of ballet and jazz. She has danced all her life, and comes from a family of dancers. Trained to be a dance teacher and state-certified, she works with different age and level groups, children and a lot of adults, her students are aged 4 to 80. Ballet classes are accompanied by live piano. Twice a year she will arrange a weekend workshop, with two professionals from both the ballet and jazz world (amongst others dancers or
teachers from the Dutch National Ballet) to give two lessons (intermediate and advanced) a day. These weekends are always a lot of fun. She keeps herself up to date with the ballet world (traveling to other dance schools in Europe and observing classes), and incorporates these experiences into her classes.'
My correspondent says that she started classes with Trees Zegers as a child, but only went back to it at age 19. She found that other Utrecht studios weren't giving the kind of training in ballet that she needed, but after adding just one class with Trees, her classmates noticed the rapid improvement. So if you are in Utrecht, and wanting to begin ballet in the right way, don't miss this opportunity.

This studio is recommended by Ilma Gordeeva, a visitor to this site, and her teacher is Vladimir V. Boldyrev. She is just beginning her studies in ballet, but has loved dance all her life. Ilma reports that the studio offers ballet class -- and also jazz -- for adult beginners. The studio is home to a professional company, and has classes for children as well.

Studio directors Lois Travers and Olivia Kennet trained at the Australian Ballet School, and in London and The Netherlands. Here's the description I received from one of their students: "They both love teaching adults from absolute beginners to more advanced dancers, and devote a huge amount of time, patience and attention to their pupils. Our 1 1/2-hour classes nearly always run close to two hours. Although the lessons focus on classical ballet in the purest sense, the classes (especially beginners) still manage to retain the 'fun' side which makes it less daunting for new adult beginners. The classes are small, approximately 8-10 per class, which gives greater teacher-to-pupil involvement." There's an 11am-12.30pm class Monday-Friday, a 6.30-8pm class most evenings, and a 3.30-5.30 class on Saturday afternoons. Call for additional classes and information about class levels.

Studio owner Greer Robertson is a former Royal New Zealand Ballet principal dancer. She offers adult beginners' classes as well as a body mechanics class for those who want to work on stretching in particular. The student who wrote to me says, 'Greer is enormously encouraging and always positive, which I find particularly valuable attributes in taking up this very difficult art! She also possesses an outrageous sense of humour, so our classes are a lot of fun.'
