This list comes in response to many requests I've received for recommendations of doctors or therapists who really understand a dancer's needs. The recommendations below are solely the opinions of the persons who've been under these health professionals' care. I take no responsibility for the experience you may personally have with them.

My aim is to provide a starting point if you have an injury, and don't find the kind of help you need from your present doctor, or the specialist you may be forced to go to through an HMO.

Another resource for referrals is the International Association of Dance Medicine at 303.554.8040. Most members are physical therapists, and many of them dance or danced. Also among them: orthopedists, Pilates therapists, and chiropractors.

USA
California
Ethan D. Feldman, D.C.
Back in Action Chiropractic Center
2500 Martin Luther King Jr. Way
Berkeley
510.843.2584
I am indebted to Dr. Ethan Feldman for top-of-the-page information about the International Association of Dance Medicine and the Dance Medicine Resource Guide.

John W. DeRoy, D.C.
1540 Market St.
San Francisco
415.864.7860
Dr. DeRoy became interested in chiropractic work after dancing with Carlos Carvajal's company, Dance Spectrum. My correspondent says that Carvajal has spoken highly of him, and that several of Dance Spectrum's former dancers go to him regularly. The woman who recommends DeRoy has not danced professionally herself, but she trusts Carvajal's comments.

Adylia Roman
Westwood (near Los Angeles)
310.446.6100
Adylia is not a physical therapist, but a certified Pilates instructor. My correspondent writes, "My miraculous recovery after my ankle surgery last year wouldn't have happened had it not been for the guidance and therapy of Pilates instructor Adylia Roman. She is a ballet teacher and ex-professional dancer herself, and understands dancers' bodies (and minds) even better than the usual Pilates instructor."

Connecticut
Dr. Stephen Schutzer
Hartford
This doctor works with members of Hartford Ballet. This is all I know so far. Anyone who can add more information, e.g., what sort of doctor he is, phone number, etc., please e-mail me. My correspondent says that the doctor's physical therapist, Nellie, comes to the ballet school every week to check up on injuries and work with dancers who have concerns. The woman who wrote to recommend Dr. Schutzer says, "He is super."
Florida
Dr. Paul Mayer
Coral Gables
In the words of my correspondent: "Dr. Mayer is a wonderful orthopedic surgeon with an excellent understanding of dancers. (He has three daughters who danced!) I believe he is now specializing in joint replacement, however." If I learn more about this doctor, I'll amend this listing.
Illinois
Dr. Marty Brohner
5318 1/2 W. Devon Ave.
Chicago
773.792.9300
Dr. Marty is a podiatrist, but has many dancers who insist that he's helped them with all sorts of problems, including knee injuries. He is a doll, very encouraging, is very much against invasive, surgical procedures unless absolutely necessary. On top of all, a wonderful human being.

Holly L. Yee, DC
Montrose Chiropractic Center
5545 W. Montrose Ave.
Chicago
773.282.6648
That first visit is expensive, what with X-rays and so forth (I paid about $200, and they said that was a discount), but Dr. Yee did bring me instant relief from a pinched neck and also from lower back pain that plagues me from time to time due to stress from the force of flamenco heelwork on hard surfaces. She is very familiar with treating dancers. I do recommend her, but if you are without health insurance, ask for an estimate of cost before committing to the visit.

New York
Harkness Center for Dance Injuries
212.598.6000
I have heard that this center will treat even dancers unable to pay for medical services. If anyone has had experiences with Harkness Center, and can elaborate on their services, please e-mail me.
Utah
Jan Watts, P.T., A.T.,C.
The Orthopedic Specialty Hospital
5848 S. Fashion Blvd. (300 East)
Murray
801.269.4060
This physical therapist and athletic trainer is recommended by an adult dancer who works at the clinic as an aide. She says: 'I have personally seen her work with quite a few dancers and have remarkable results. She is known for her uncanny ability to find and fix back problems when no one else can. She helped me personally with an ankle problem last year. To see her, a perscription for physical therapy from a doctor is needed.'

All of the following listings come from "Bek," owner of a Salt Lake City ballet school, and frequent poster on the alt.arts.ballet list. I will include more information about the following doctors as I receive it. If anyone has had experience with them, or can provide phone numbers, etc., please e-mail me.

Russ Toronto
Sports Medicine
Salt Lake City

Max Jones
Podiatrist

Dr. Ashburn
University of Utah
Pain Clinic and Center

Carmella

Texas
Hal M. Welch III, MS, PT, CSCS
Healthsouth Sports Medicine & Rehabilitation Center
3800 Hulen, Suite 100
Ft. Worth
817.377.3033
Here's what my correspondent had to say: "Hal understands dancers. He knows that telling a dancer to stop dancing while he/she heals is like whistling into the wind, so he tailors a program for a dancer that will work without shutting down the entire machine. And on top of that, he's really friendly."

Performing Arts Center
Methodist Hospital
6565 Fannin St.
Houston
713.394.6088
Consortium of physicians operating through the Methodist Hospital emergency room. Physicians and specialists are available to amateur and professional artists 24 hours a day. If you've experienced care through this center, please e-mail me with details. I'm basing this listing on a magazine item about this hospital's new offerings, and have received no personal recommendation of the Performing Arts Center.

Washington DC
The following three doctors/therapists are recommended by a mom who says, "These folks have done great things for my kiddo, not only in the way they treated her troubled ankles but in the way they dealt with a pre-teen -- with respect and warmth and encouragement."

(Mexico City)
and
Escuela Nacional de Danza Nellie y Gloria Campobello
Campos Elíseos 480

Delegación Miguel Hidalgo
(Mexico City)
280.4361
Dr. Monroy is recommended by Rocio Barraza Rivacoba, who many of you may know from her very insightful postings on various ballet forums. In addition to Dr. Monroy's masters degree in sports medicine, she is also a dance teacher. She specializes in dancers, both professional and recreational, and in professional athletes. She has had research articles published by medical journals in Europe, USA and Cuba, and also in several Mexican publications. She has participated in international congresses of medicine, and with Rocio participated in international congresses of dance medicine held in Mexico. According to Rocio, "She is a very dedicated doctor that shows her humanity to her patients. She is great with children."

I have no further information beyond what is listed here, and update the list as time permits. If you notice an typo, or something that needs updating, please let me know! Filling in with full addresses, proximity to large cities, or additional information about any of the offices is especially welcome. And, of course, e-mail me to add your incredible health professional to the list. It's on the honor system: Please, no doctors/therapists recommending themselves.
