Over 30 returning gymnast gets bitten by ballet
I thought you'd be interested to hear a rather different slant on the beginning-adult ballet experience.
I was a gymnastics enthusiast for 5 years of my childhood until recurring injury, dissatisfaction with the sport, and lack of encouragement from my parents forced me to withdraw.
Flash forward 18 years: At the age of 33, I once again fell in love with the sport and was motivated to take an adult gymnastics class. That was a year ago, and I am still in my class and loving every second of it! Many of my old skills have returned to me, and I am in the process of learning new ones.
What, may you ask, does this have to do with adult ballet? I stumbled upon your site several months ago. Since it bore great similarities to my favorite adult-gymnastics site, I perused it with great interest. As I did, I remembered that all world-class gymnasts study a certain amount of ballet to help them with their gymnastics -- and also so that they can have a repetoire of ballet moves to use in their floor exercises.
I always told people that if i hadn't become a gymnast, I would have become a ballerina. So...I've decided to take the plunge and enroll in an adult ballet class in my area. I'm certain this will improve my gymnastics, especially my flexibility, and give me an even greater interest in ballet.
I live in the Philadelphia area, and my school -- The Academy of International Ballet -- is only a 15-minute drive from my home. In case you're wondering, I will celebrate my 35th year on this planet next Monday,
February 3. -- Celeste
