Tales from the adult dance student avant garde
Vietnamese immigrant fulfills childhood dream
Hi everyone, I have been reading all of your stories and I am very pleased that I am not the only one out there with a secret dream of being able to dance well. I don't dare to dream of becoming a ballerina because I know the reality of the business, but I am glad that the dance world is accepting of nontraditional students.

I am an immigrant from Vietnam and while growing up, my family did not have the money to allow us to take any type of lessons. I envied my classmates who were able to do exactly what I wanted to do. I remember checking out ballet books in the fifth grade and trying the moves; but of couse, it's not the same.

My undergraduate years were the best because I was able to take ballroom, dances of India and Indonesia, jazz, and a ballet class.

Now that I am married with a full-time job and have a two-year old daughter, I finally decided that there is never going to be a good time to pursue my love for ballet. So I am now taking six ballet classes a week. They are very tough for me, but I love the challenge.

I just hope that I will be able to take ballet for many decades to come. Of course I have to thank my wonderful husband for his support. Without him, I know I would not be able to pursue my dream. -- Hong
